The Hex Sys-based building shape can be arranged to fit the location
photo: Open Architecture
New York and Beijing-based design firm Open Architecture has created a flexible and reusable building system for a variety of functions.
Characterised as light, industrialised, flexible, sustainable and reusable, the first prototype of Hex-Sys is in Guangzhou China, for the real estate company Vanke.
Hex-Sys is a building system is designed to be quickly assembled and easily adapted to many different functions, then disassembled after each use and reassembled in another location, preventing waste of resources.
The prototype is made of hexagonal cells, which can be rearranged according to different site and program needs.
The basic building cell is a 40m sq hexagon module with three types of cells, indoor-open, indoor-closed and outdoor-open.
Sandblasted and anodised aluminium panels are used for exterior cladding because of durability and low maintenance. Bamboo, the rapidly renewable material, is used throughout the interior spaces.

Architecture touches upon aesthetics, image, light, materiality, details,
spirituality and many other things. But most important of all to us,
in our era and social context, is its innovative power to transform people and the way they live,
while striking a new balance between the man-made and the nature.
OPEN takes on this challenge directly, emerging itself in the ample opportunities
along with greatest difficulties at the same time,
to test with our own vehicle, the power of Architecture
and its potential being in the greatest social and environmental transformation
ever in the human history to date.
